April 17th,
Even on a night where cars were breaking down,
ice was melting and many Taiwanese players were M.I.A.,
the hockey was still intense. The first game was a late
4-3 win for the Bears, keeping them in top spot of the league
and the later game was a 6-3 win for the Tigers.
With the upper tier (restaurant) open to the
public for the first time the season, the Bears, without
Captain Steve Mossing, were lead by John Thompson and John
Long to their fourth win of the season.
Mark Paas did his best to win the game for
the Rhinos scoring on two superb individual efforts in the
second period, one when he cut past the whole Bears team
and stuffed it upstairs behind Bears goalie, Neal Watts.
By the end of the second, the game was still
tied at two and as the teams entered the last three minutes
the game was locked at three. But with only fifteen seconds
remaining John Long was able to break in all alone and put
the Bears up by one to win the game.
In the second match of the evening, both the
Tigers and Raptors were missing some keep players. Due to
a National Roller Hockey Competition in Kaoshung, a total
seven Taiwanese players were missing in the match, three
from the Tigers and four of the Raptors. Also the Raptor’s
were forced to use a substitute goalie since their regular
Jeff Redl with stuck on a highway in a broken down SUV.
The game started out with a lot of pressure
being put on the Raptors in their own zone and the Tigers
were able to pounce on many of the Raptors defensive lapses,
scoring five unanswered goals.
It was not until half ways through the second
were the Raptors able to get on the board when a wrist shot
from Jeremy Campbell eluded Tigers goalie, Justin Lewis.
The Raptors then looked like they might have been able to
fight back and scored twice more to close the gap to two
goals.
Once again though the Tigers were lead by Steven
Clarke sealing the deal and getting his third of the night
on an empty netter. The line on Paul Bray and Richard Krahn
played a super game in the losing effort for the Raptors,
going +2 on the night and not being on for any of the Tigers
goals.
