猛熊4-1吞噬暴龍 / 犀牛6-4撞翻老虎

5月1日晚間進行的兩場賽事，暫居排頭的猛熊隊再度拿暴龍隊進補，靠著第三節連下三分，以4-1輕取暴龍，而第二場犀牛則在第一節猛灌五分奠定勝基，6-4氣走老虎，隨著老虎隊的落敗，四勝一負的猛熊隊冠軍寶座越坐越穩。
猛熊、暴龍首戰前兩節雙方大演防守戰，熊隊僅靠代打新兵RICK在開賽後25秒右翼射進一分，維持著些微的領先，直到第三節開賽後John
Thompson個人連進兩分，一舉拉開差距，也讓一路緊咬的暴龍最後反擊失效，終場猛熊隊就以4-1獲勝，戰績持續獨走。
犀牛、老虎之戰，則形成一場「右側球門」的決鬥，兩隊總計十分得分裡，全部都由右側球門射進，犀牛隊首節一口氣猛攻五分Marcus
Maidment、Mark Paas、Rob Dombowsky輪流上演得分秀，打得老虎隊一陣兵荒馬亂，然而陷入困境的老虎隊第二節換邊進攻後，射門同樣有如神助，單節回敬四球，立刻將分數緊追回來，其中兩位本土球員江志遠貢獻兩球、游凱文也有一分進帳，不料第三節老虎隊換回進攻左側球門後，攻勢再度受阻，犀牛Clay
Laughren臨去秋波補上一記，終場兩分之差，犀牛讓老虎跌回排名第二。
May 1st
The Bears jumped out to an early lead on a
long slap-shot by replacement player Rick Charette. That
goal caught Raptors keeper Jeff Redl unprepared within the
first 30sec of the game. Then for the next 40 mins both
teams battled up and down the ice going scoreless until
early into the third.
The Raptors, still winless this season, were
missing four players once again. Despite being short staffed,
the Raptors were able to pressure the league leading 4-1
Bears, although most of the Raptors shots came from a distance
or from low percentage areas.
Late in the second period, with the score 1-0
Bears, a retaliation by the Raptors Paul Bray on Craig Crawford
awarded the Bears with a golden opportunity. The Bears leading
point scorer, John Thompson, added to the Bears lead on
the ensuing power play on a great feed from Jimmy Cho.
After getting away with a “Bear Hug” to Paul
Bray, Crawford was lucky yet again as his shot from about
45 feet out beat Redl high to the blocker side. Now with
the score 3-0 the Raptors tried to push more, but the pressure
backfired and Thompson scored his second of the night to
put the game out of reach.
One positive on the night for the Raptors was
the performance of Dylan Liu. At 14 years of age, he is
the youngest player in the League. His play on the point
was rewarded with his first goal in the CIHL after the Raptors
juggled their lines again to try and get a spark.
The Bears now sit alone on top of the league
table heading into the final half of the season.
In the second match of the evening the Tigers,
without Captain Steven Clarke due to a broken foot, were
put behind the eight ball quickly. The Rhinos were lead
by their captain, Mark Paas, who beat Tigers goalie three
times in the first period for a natural hat-trick.
Without Clarke, the Tigers were unable to mount
a strong attack for the first period.. They were constantly
being turned away by the Rhinos new found defensive pairing
of Marcus Maidment and Kevin Kennedy then counter-attacked
by the Rhinos superior offence.
The Tigers were able to make it a more exciting
game in the second period scoring 4 unanswered goals to
make it 5-4 Rhinos and set the stage for an exciting 3rd
period. Great efforts by their Taiwanese Nationals Kevin,
Jerry and Eric and two replacement players Nick King and
Scott Foreman, put pressure on the Rhinos and forced them
to start making mistakes.
But the calm and experienced Rhinos were
not about to lose the game and got just their second win
of the season 6-4.
